Today’s Ranch
Deer have different nutritional needs depending on their life stage. Bucks require higher protein levels during antler development and increased energy during the rut. Does need the most nutrition in late pregnancy through the weaning phase, while fawns experience rapid growth in their first six months and rely heavily on optimal early nutrition.
Providing consistent, high-quality nutrition year-round helps improve overall herd health and allows deer to realize their full genetic potential. A strong supplemental feeding program can lower fawn and post-rut mortality, enhance antler size, and help bridge nutritional gaps in natural forage, especially during critical periods like gestation, lactation, and antler growth.
Secret of Sanctuary
Today, we recognize the importance of helping nature produce healthy whitetail deer. With a basic understanding of digestion, feeding behavior, life cycles, and nutritional needs, we can play an active role in supporting strong does and impressive bucks. Through proper deer management and nutrition, we ensure does can produce thriving future generations and bucks can develop superior antlers.
Though related to cattle and sheep, deer aren’t grazers. Their smaller stomachs limit both the type and amount of food they can consume at one time. Unlike livestock that thrive on hay and grain, deer require more frequent feeding of energy-rich, high-protein plants.
Whitetails naturally prefer browse, acorns, and leafy greens over fibrous grasses. Their diet shifts with the seasons based on plant availability and quality. This digestive flexibility helps deer survive, but it’s a slow process. Sudden dietary changes, like feeding corn or hay in winter, can actually harm deer that have adapted to a high-fiber winter diet.
